While
on the internet you will need to follow some simple or basic rules in order to
stay secure.
Safety Practices on the internet
Do not use the same password for different websites. With the help
of a password manager you can generate passwords (complex) and then save them.
Don’t give out your personal
information e.g.
phone number, address/ location, credit card number, or other personal
information unless it is needed for a transaction at a site that you trust.
If
you feel someone is being a threat or posing danger, especially on
social media you can either block them
or block and report or report i.e. inform your internet service provider or
the authority in the media you are using for example on. Facebook.
Browse with a firewall, antivirus
(recent and updated), and antispyware software to secure your system against attacks
by hackers.
Be very cautious about opening email
and file attachments from an
unknown sender.
To avoid falling victim to phishing— which uses a forged email message,
purportedly from a respectable organization, to elicit personal data— do not
click on hyperlinks send via social media or in emails from companies with
which you do business. Phishing emails contain a link leading to a fake website
that looks exactly like the site of the alleged sender. If you intend to visit
any company’s website, open your browser and manually enter the site’s address.
Users
of peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing networks or protocols should open up only part of their computer system,
not their entire hard drive, to sharing.
Update your phone or PC when manufacturers prompt you to
update and fix bugs or patch the loopholes in your system.
